Detrol La is an antispasmodic that is used to treat an overactive bladder by relaxing the muscles in the bladder.

General information
Detrol La belongs to a group of medications known as antispasmodics and anticholinergics. This medication is used to treat an overactive bladder. By relaxing the muscles in the bladder, tolterodine improves the ability to control the urination. It reduces spasms of the bladder muscles.
Directions
Take Detrol La exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The usual recommended dose is 4 mg once daily to start. The dose may later be reduced to 2 mg once daily based on individual response and needs. The maximum dose is 4 mg daily. For people with reduced liver or kidney function, and people taking certain medications, the recommended dose is 2 mg once daily. Take this medication by mouth, with or without food. Take it with a full glass of water. Swallow the pill whole.
Precautions
Before taking Detrol La you should talk with your doctor if you have kidney disease, kidney failure, liver disease, liver failure, cirrhosis, hepatitis, irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia), glaucoma, Myasthenia gravis, digestive problems, difficulty passing urine, enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), any allergies. It can cause blurred vision or side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Do not drive or perform tasks that require alertness. Limit alcoholic beverages. Alcohol can increase some of the side effects. This medication can cause decreased sweating. Elderly people may be more sensitive to this drug.
Contraindications
You should not take Detrol La if you are allergic to tolterodine or any of the ingredients of the medication, or if you have gastric retention (stomach obstruction), uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention. Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Get emergency medical help if you have dry mouth, dry eyes, headache, constipation, stomach upset or pain, dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness, blurred vision, fatigue, gas, abdominal pain, heartburn, bloody urine, trouble urinating, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, fainting, swelling of the face or throat, hives, difficulty breathing, fever, itching. Drug interactions

Interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are fast, slow or irregular heartbeat, fainting, unusual excitement, mental or mood changes.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store the drugs in the bathroom. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
